Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)

A non-traumatic brain injury (NTBI)—also known as an acquired brain injury (ABI)—occurs when the brain is damaged by internal medical or biological factors, rather than an external blow or physical force.

These injuries can happen suddenly or develop over time, and they often have lasting effects on thinking, behavior, emotions, and physical abilities.

The impact can range from mild to severe, depending on what part of the brain is affected and how quickly treatment is received.

Common Causes of Non-Traumatic Brain Injury

🧠 Stroke

A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or reduced, depriving brain cells of oxygen and nutrients. This can cause sudden changes in speech, movement, vision, or cognition.

🌊 Oxygen Deprivation (Hypoxia/Anoxia)

When the brain does not receive enough oxygen, even for a short period, brain cells begin to die. This can occur during cardiac arrest, choking, near-drowning, or severe breathing problems.

⚠️ Aneurysm

An aneurysm is a weakened area in a blood vessel that can balloon and rupture. When this happens in the brain, it can cause bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke) and serious neurological damage.

🎗️ Brain Tumors

Tumors—whether benign or malignant—can press on brain structures, disrupt normal signaling, and affect cognitive or physical function depending on their location.

🦠 Infections

Infections such as meningitis or encephalitis can cause inflammation in the brain or surrounding tissues, potentially leading to brain injury, swelling, and long-term complications.

☠️ Toxic Exposure

Exposure to harmful substances (such as carbon monoxide, drugs, or environmental toxins) can damage brain cells by interfering with oxygen use or normal brain chemistry.

Possible Effects of ABI

The effects of an acquired brain injury vary widely, but may include:

  • 🧩 Memory problems (short-term or long-term)
  • 🗣️ Difficulty with speech or language
  • 🧠 Changes in attention, processing speed, or problem-solving
  • 😔 Emotional changes such as depression, anxiety, or mood swings
  • 💪 Physical challenges like weakness, balance issues, or coordination problems
  • 🔄 Fatigue and reduced stamina
  • 👥 Changes in personality or behavior

Some people recover fully, while others experience long-term or permanent changes that require ongoing support.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Recovery from ABI is often a gradual, ongoing process and may involve a team approach:

  • 🏥 Medical care (neurologists, primary care, emergency treatment)
  • 🧠 Cognitive rehabilitation therapy (memory, attention, executive function)
  • 🗣️ Speech therapy (communication and swallowing support)
  • 💪 Physical therapy (strength, balance, mobility)
  • ❤️ Occupational therapy (daily living skills and independence)
  • 🧘 Mental health support (coping skills, emotional adjustment)

Recovery is highly individual—progress may be steady, uneven, or nonlinear.

Living with an ABI

Many individuals living with ABI benefit from:

  • 📅 Structured routines and visual schedules
  • 🧠 Cognitive strategies (lists, reminders, repetition)
  • 🏠 Environmental supports (simplified, organized spaces)
  • 🤝 Peer and family support systems
  • 💬 Support groups for survivors and caregivers

Community connection plays a major role in long-term quality of life.

Prevention (When Possible)

While not all ABI causes are preventable, some risks can be reduced:

  • ❤️ Managing heart health and blood pressure (stroke prevention)
  • 🚫 Avoiding carbon monoxide exposure (install detectors)
  • 🦠 Vaccinations and prompt treatment of infections
  • 🚑 Seeking emergency care quickly during stroke symptoms (“time is brain”)
  • 🧯 Safe practices to reduce medical complications and toxic exposure

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

What is a Traumatic Brain Injury?

A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is an injury to the brain caused by an external physical force, such as a blow, jolt, or sudden impact to the head or body. This force can disrupt normal brain function, affecting thinking, movement, emotions, and overall behavior.

TBIs range widely in severity—from mild concussions that may resolve quickly to severe injuries that can cause long-term disability or coma. Even so-called “mild” TBIs can have lasting effects if not properly treated or if repeated over time.

⚠️ Common Causes of TBI

TBIs can happen in everyday life and often occur unexpectedly. Common causes include:

  • 🚗 Motor vehicle accidents (car, motorcycle, bicycle collisions)
  • 🤕 Falls, especially on stairs or slippery surfaces
  • 🏈 Sports injuries, including contact sports like football, soccer, or boxing
  • 🧱 Struck by or against objects, such as falling debris or accidental impacts
  • ⚔️ Violence or assaults, including being hit with an object or physical blows
  • 🏗️ Workplace accidents, particularly in construction or industrial settings

These events highlight how quickly a normal situation can lead to a serious brain injury.

📊 Severity Levels of TBI

🟢 Mild TBI (Concussion)
  • Brief confusion or disorientation
  • Headache or pressure in the head
  • Dizziness or balance issues
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Memory gaps around the event

Even mild TBIs can affect daily functioning and may require rest and monitoring.

🟡 Moderate TBI
  • Longer-lasting confusion or loss of consciousness
  • Difficulty with thinking, attention, or memory
  • Physical symptoms such as nausea, weakness, or coordination issues
  • Possible need for hospitalization and imaging

Recovery may take weeks to months and often requires rehabilitation.

🔴 Severe TBI
  • Extended loss of consciousness or coma
  • Significant cognitive and physical impairments
  • Difficulty speaking, moving, or responding
  • Possible long-term disability or need for lifelong care

Severe TBIs often require intensive medical treatment and long-term rehabilitation.

🧩 Common Symptoms of TBI

Symptoms can vary depending on the injury but may include:

  • 🧠 Persistent headaches or pressure in the head
  • 🤢 Nausea or vomiting
  • 🌀 Dizziness or balance problems
  • 🧩 Memory loss or confusion
  • 🗣️ Trouble finding words or speaking clearly
  • 😔 Mood changes (irritability, depression, anxiety)
  • ⚡ Difficulty concentrating or processing information
  • 😴 Fatigue or sleep disturbances
  • 👁️ Sensitivity to light or sound

Some symptoms appear immediately, while others may develop hours or days later.

🏥 Diagnosis of TBI

Diagnosing a TBI involves a combination of clinical evaluation and medical imaging.

Healthcare professionals may use:

  • 🧠 Neurological exams to test memory, reflexes, coordination, and awareness
  • 🖥️ CT scans to quickly detect bleeding, swelling, or fractures
  • 📡 MRI scans for detailed imaging of brain tissue
  • 📝 Symptom history review, including how the injury occurred and changes afterward

Early diagnosis is critical, as it helps guide treatment decisions and prevents further complications.

🔄 Treatment and Recovery

Treatment depends on severity but may include:

  • 🏥 Rest and monitoring (especially for mild TBIs)
  • 💊 Medication for pain, seizures, or mood symptoms
  • 🧠 Cognitive rehabilitation therapy
  • 🗣️ Speech and language therapy
  • 💪 Physical therapy for strength and balance
  • ❤️ Occupational therapy for daily living skills

Recovery is often nonlinear, meaning progress can come in steps rather than a straight path.

🌱 Living After a TBI

Many individuals adjust to life after a TBI with the help of:

  • 🧠 Memory aids (notes, alarms, planners)
  • 📅 Structured daily routines
  • 🏠 Safe, organized environments
  • 🤝 Support groups and community resources
  • ❤️ Family and caregiver support

With the right support, many people continue to build meaningful, independent lives after injury.

Title: Why We Sleep
Details here

The Washington State Community Action Partnership (WSCAP). A statewide nonprofit association that coordinates and supports a network of Community Action Agencies working to reduce poverty across Washington State.
  • A statewide umbrella organization for 30 Community Action Agencies serving all 39 counties in Washington.

  • Focused on addressing the causes and conditions of poverty through advocacy, training, and coordination of services.

  • Part of the larger national Community Action Network, which was created during the 1964 War on Poverty under the Economic Opportunity Act.

WSCAP itself usually does not provide direct services to individuals. Instead, it:
  • Advocates for policies that support low-income communities

  • Provides training and technical assistance to local agencies

  • Coordinates programs and resources statewide

  • Supports data, planning, and community needs assessments

  • Represents Community Action Agencies in the state legislature and policy discussions

The local Community Action Agencies in the network provide services such as:
  • Housing and rent assistance

  • Energy and utility assistance

  • Food programs and food banks

  • Job training and employment support

  • Early childhood programs (like Head Start)

  • Financial coaching and education

  • Senior services and healthcare navigation

Community Action Agencies were designed to:
  • Help people move out of poverty, not just manage crises

  • Develop local solutions to local problems

  • Include community voices in decision-making through boards that include low-income residents, public officials, and private sector members.
