Each March, we recognize Brain Injury Awareness Month — a time dedicated to raising awareness, offering support, and amplifying the voices of those affected by brain injuries. Whether caused by a fall, car accident, sports injury, or other traumatic events, brain injuries impact millions of individuals and families each year.
Understanding Brain Injury
A brain injury can be traumatic (TBI), resulting from an external force, or acquired (ABI), caused by internal factors like strokes, tumors, or infections. No two brain injuries are alike, and effects can range from mild concussions to severe life-altering conditions.
Common Symptoms May Include:
✅ Memory loss or confusion
✅ Headaches and dizziness
✅ Fatigue or sleep issues
✅ Changes in mood or behavior
✅ Difficulty concentrating
Why Awareness Matters
Brain injuries are often called “invisible injuries” because the struggles aren’t always physically apparent. Yet, survivors may face lifelong challenges—emotionally, cognitively, and physically. Awareness helps break down stigma, fosters empathy, and promotes access to vital resources.
Support and Advocacy
This month is an opportunity to:
- Educate yourself and others on prevention, especially around helmet safety, fall prevention, and recognizing concussion signs.
- Support brain injury survivors and caregivers through understanding and patience.
- Advocate for policies that fund rehabilitation programs, support research, and expand access to care.
